WALDORF HOUSE
Built as the first Freemasons' lodge in Manchester in 1863, this beautifully detailed stone property is Grade II listed with richly decorated street elevations. Look out for the original masonic symbols hidden across the façade…
Despite its many reincarnations, Waldorf House had kept some stunning internal features including decorative ceilings, plasterwork, and pilasters and we wanted to retain the sense of awe experienced in the main spaces. A challenging site, within the setting of Manchester Town Hall and in a Conservation Area, we successfully achieved a change of use consent to create 24 new apartments. Major walls have been lime plastered again and lath and plaster ceilings have been repaired and reinstated. Two amazing duplexes are slotted within the main Masonic Hall and apartments are designed with glass details to flood spaces with light. With clever design touches throughout, the result is the perfect mix of original character and crisp minimalism. We are proud to have delivered a scheme of outstanding homes mixing the best of the old, and the best of the new - this is unique contemporary living in the heart of the city.
