High Street Library, Bolton

Built on the site of the austere and inaccessible Victorian Library this new library combines community facilities with book lending and Internet access, creating a modern, inclusive space.

The new building is kept deliberately low and given character with coloured render, curved roof and a central ‘land mark’ lift tower, which is glazed with a series of artwork panels developed by local children. Curtain wall glazing to the main library space creates a visual connection to the high street, encouraging visitors to approach and come in.

In the evenings the building takes on a glowing appearance via the glazing and translucent Kalwall façade.
